Allendale Tar Barl

Tar Barl

New Years Eve in Allendale, the Northumberland town near Fell View Cottage, is a most spectacular and ancient tradition - The Tar Barl.

In a Festival, that Health and Safety enforcers dare not stop, local men, known as "guisers" exercise their hereditary right to carry half barrels of burning tar around the town before throwing them onto a bonfire in the town square just before midnight.

Wearing special costume clothing the "guisers" light-up the entire town with their burning barrels.  No matter what the weather the event is never cancelled.

Accommodation is always hard to find in the neighbourhood so it is wise to book early.  Fell View Cottage is available for the New Year Week - check availability and book on-line
